Hometown Celebration: May the Fourth Be With You!

May the Fourth Star Wars Hometown ImageHometown Celebration returning to downtown Milly on May 4th

Milledgeville, GA – Main Street is excited to announce the return of the Hometown Celebration to downtown Milledgeville, and there is SO much to celebrate! In addition to being named a Great American Main Street City, this year marks 30 years of Main Street’s service to Milledgeville, building community connections through shared experiences. Main Street, the City of Milledgeville, Georgia College, and downtown businesses have partnered in shared support of this much anticipated community event, keeping it free and open to the public.

Introduced in 2014, the Hometown Celebration honored the City of Milledgeville Main Street/DDA earning award and designation as a national Great American Main Street City, as a community whose success serves as a model for preservation-based commercial district revitalization across the nation. Now in its fifth year, the Hometown Celebration has quickly become a community favorite event. On Friday, May 4th, from 6pm – midnight, the 100 block of West Hancock Street will be OPEN to pedestrians! While strolling around, be sure to check out the Old Capital Car Club’s boss classic cars from 6-9pm.

Two popular bands will be performing to keep the fun flowing. Local favorites from past First Friday events form the band Fiancé. They will open at 6pm with their smooth, old school Motown jams. At 8pm, headlining band Stereotype brings their unique music flavor from the Augusta, Georgia area with high energy, party rocking music of top 40’s hits, 90s hip hop, and everything in between.

New to Hometown this year… Embracing the Star Wars fandom holiday with which this celebration coincides, downtown will “Strike Back” and evade attack of the daily ho-hum at this event giving the community “New Hope” for galactic entertainment as the fun “Force Awakens.” Costumes of the “First Order” are encouraged to channel your inner Jedi, Sith, Leia, Stormtrooper, or other character. Entertainment reigns in the downtown galaxy and includes a Chewbacca Sound-Alike Contest, Costume Contest, Ahch-some activities, intergalactic photo ops, and, of course… May the Fourth Be with You!

8:00pm – Costume Contest
$20 Milly Money prize for winner in each of the 4 categories: Under 12, 12-17, 18+ & People’s Choice. Winners in an age category are not eligible to win People’s Choice award.

Hometown Celebration

Hometown Celebration
2-10pm

Milledgeville earned national recognition in 2014 as one of the finest downtowns in America and was awarded as a Great American Main Street City. In honor of our community being awarded as one of the top in the nation, our community partners are hosting a celebration to which all community members and supporters are invited. The Hometown Celebration is always a crowd-pleaser, with this year’s event on a Saturday, having extended hours, and has been moved earlier in the year, when the weather isn’t as hot, for a block party of epic proportions!

On Saturday, April 22nd, from 2-10 pm, the 100 block of West Hancock Street will be OPEN to pedestrians for the 3rd Hometown Celebration! Blind Driver, Scott Little, The Majestics and other live bands will provide music to keep downtown Milledgeville rockin’ and toe-tappin while there will be activities the entire family can enjoy. Local organizations will keep the activities going, downtown businesses will have limited time special sales, and the outdoor dining options will be plentiful. Black Heritage Plaza Shindig

black-heritage-shindig-poster-for-screen-01Please join us and invite your friends and family!

Bring your lawn chairs for an evening of lively music, good food and refreshing drink in the fellowship of friends!

The Black Heritage Plaza Shindig is in honor of Milledgeville’s community history and heritage at the rejuvenated Black Heritage Plaza in downtown Milledgeville, next to the historic Allen’s Market building at 101 W. McIntosh Street, on Friday, September 23, 2016 from 6-10pm. The Plaza was originally developed during the planning of the Bicentennial events in 2003. During that time, it became evident that a permanent, public space that could be utilized by all citizens would be a meaningful and appropriate way to honor the contributions that African-American businesses have made to the history and heritage of the downtown commercial district. This project visually enhanced downtown Milledgeville with a sensitive and significant reminder of the once vibrant black commercial district. The original plaza, the current upgrades and the Black Heritage Plaza Shindig all help to promote a broader understanding of and real appreciation for the significant roles that African-Americans played in the history and culture of this community.

Fall Line Rambler will kick off the evening’s music at 6:30pm with a sound self-described as “Rock and Blues with a sprinkling of Country.” Continuing with an upbeat blend and rounding out the evening, headliner Dynamic Sounds of Phunk brings some serious jams beginning at 7:30pm. Dynamic Sounds of Phunk features the performances of local musicians Jerry Hargrove on sax, BJ Hill on percussion, Victor Tucker on percussion, Troy Barnes on lead guitar, Dexter Mack on bass, and Rodney Speights on keyboard.

This celebration is sponsored by The City of Milledgeville, Allied Arts, Milledgeville Main Street, and the Knight Foundation through a grant awarded through the Knight Foundation Fund for Milledgeville of the Community Foundation of Central Georgia. There is no admission cost for this outdoor event and Barberitos will be vending their savory food and refreshing drinks to satisfy stomachs and please palettes. Don’t miss this opportunity to relax in the company of friends and be the first to see the magnificent upgrades when the Chamber of Commerce makes it official with a ribbon cutting at the renovated Black Heritage Plaza.
