What is Junior Miss?
Established in 1957, America's Junior Miss is the oldest scholarship program in America that benefits high school girls. The non-profit organization awards scholarships on the local, state, and national level. America's Junior Miss has shaped the future for thousands of young women by taking them to a new level of personal growth and allowing them to pursue their educational dreams.
Today, more than 5,000 high school senior girls participate in approximately 600 Junior Miss competitions across the country each year. Not for the prize of being the most beautiful but to be the best they can be in mind, body, and spirit. Mobile, Alabama is proud to serve as the home for this outstanding program and to be the host city for its national competition.
It is important to keep in mind that the motivating force behind the Junior Miss program's effort to recognize, reward and encourage excellence is its aim to contribute to the inner development of each participant. The focus of the Junior Miss program is always on encouraging each young woman to strive for continual improvement and to always be her best self.
At each level, be it local, state or national, the Junior Miss program believes the young woman ultimately singled out by the panel of judges is “a representative chosen from a group of winners, not a winner, selected from a group of representatives.” She represents the outstanding qualities of all the young women participating in the program.
Guided totally by volunteers, the Junior Miss Scholarship Program works to keep operating costs at a minimum so that scholarships can be increasingly generous. Junior Miss is not a beauty pageant, but a program that emphasizes excellence in every area of a young woman's life. The contestants are judged by the same standards on all three levels of competition – local, state, and national. Physical appearance is not judged.
